The EZSolarGlider is a RC glider which flies using the sun 's energy .
Its design is based on the hand launch models , it uses the same kind of airfoil.
Therefore , it has very good flight characteristics , including reduced vertical speed .
It is able to fly in a moderate wind ( 10-15 km / h).
Building is a traditional one, using a carbon tube for the rear section of the fuselage .It is fitted with a V -tail which protects from the ground and minimizes drag .
Its building requires a few evenings;
- Wingspan : 640 mm
- Wing area 10 dm2
- Weight : 100 grams
- Wing loading : 10g / dm 2
The design of EZSolarGlider meets several requirements :
- Easy building
- A very low cost thanks to the exclusive use of off the shelf components : solar cells, motor, propeller, speed controller, receiver , servos and batteries.Price is around 100 €
- Robustness : it can absorb shocks thanks to its light weight . The solar cells are fixed under the covering , which protects from wrong manipulations.
The plane has a power to weight ration of more than 110 W / kg with a solar irradiance of 1000W / m2, which is very high and allows to fly from April at 11 Am, and in May from 9 Am to 17:00 PM when sunny day.
The rise rate is quite comfortable,
Beginning of May 2016 at 15:00 , it reached in 1 minute an altitude of 50 meters, despite a significant wind .
It is even possible to fly with small clouds hiding the sun.
